MUSICIANS PERFORM BENEFIT FOR RYTHM FOUNDATION

On Sunday, Oct. 1, from 5 to 8 pm, five Twin Cities musicians will perform for a Cannon Falls-based, non-profit foundation to raise funds for its programs, which train underprivileged youth in music. The fundraiser will take place from 5 to 8 PM at the Mill City Tavern on Division Street in Cannon Falls.

Five musicians will perform in a song-circle format, taking turns performing songs of their choice. The performers include Wayne Hamilton, David Hanners, Paul Horton, Heather Murphy and Katy Tessman. All of these musicians regularly perform acoustic music at a wide variety of venues in the Twin Cities metro area. All are accomplished singer/songwriters. Hamilton, Hanners, Murphy and Tessman were finalists in the recent Minnesota Folk Festival’s New Folk Songwriting Contest, and Hanners was selected as one of two winners. Both Horton and Hamilton have released CDs of their original songs; Hanners, Murphy and Tessman plan CD releases in the near future.

Reaching Youth Through Music (RYTHM) will purchase instruments and arrange low-cost group instruction for youth aged 8 to 18 who seek to learn music. When the students complete the course of instruction, the foundation will donate the instruments to the students as gifts. Although the RYTHM Foundation is located in Cannon Falls, instruction will take place in Minneapolis and St. Paul, where the need for the organization’s programs is greatest. Funds will be used to purchase instruments, rent space for the lessons and provide a small stipend for instructors.

Foundation organizer and Director Missy Steichen said, "We could think of no better way to raise funds for our foundation than through the activity we support for young people: music. We are very grateful to these generous musicians for donating their time and talent to our program. We hope the public will join us as we announce our plans and celebrate the initial step toward our goal."

Steichen invites interested musicians and the general public to contact her for more information about the RYTHM Foundation and its work. She can be reached at 507-263-7066.
