Is it possible to get 7.1 sound on a ps3?
I have a digital optical cable which can do 5.1 but my sound system has 7 speakers one being a big bass speaker now i looked it up and i got digital optical = 5.1 and HDMI=7.1 but my ps3 only has one port which i use for my video for 1080p vision .
Is there a way to keep the 1080p vision and also have 7.1 running.
I have a samsung 4 series with tons of ports like 3hdmi slots , component , Vga , digital out and i think digital in ports
My cinema system thin has Hdmi port , optical in port , component audio , AV audio , wireless , usb port
The previous poster is incorrect, you do not need an HDMI 1.3 receiver to get 7.1 audio through HDMI, in fact some HDMI 1.3 receivers don't even accept audio.
You need any receiver capable of audio across HDMI, which means the HDMI specs should say "repeater" rather that "switcher" - repeater does audio and video, switcher only does audio.
HDMI 1.3 specs for audio are only necessary when you wish the receiver to decode dts-ma and Dolby TrueHD. The PS3 doesn't have the ability to bitstream these formats, so it decodes them with no lossless to uncompressed PCM, which is in the HDMI spec from HDMI 1.0 right up to HDMI 1.3
However getting one that's HDMI 1.3 is probably the cheapest route right now. Check out www.uBid.com or www.eCost.com and you should find an Onkyo TX-SR705 for $433 which is capable of 24/96 7.1 uncompressed audio, 100w/ch into 7.1 and THX Select certification.
