Question about tuning the guitar?

I just got new guitar strings, and I'm tuning the high e string to the normal tuning, and it's almost to the right note/key/whatever you want to call it people call it different things, and i can feel the tension as i tune it higher to where i can feel that the string is about to pop/break, I don't know what to do!! I need to do it I have what i guess you can call a "gig" coming up in 3 days, and I need these strings on! I don't wanna go to somebody to do it, that'll be kind of embarrassing, I basically taught myself guitar except for just 2 books on simple chords and tabs, but I never read up on string changing and all that, my bro usually did it for me when i never had time to, which was all the time. Plus, I guess now would be the time to learn. Anyone?

First of all, make sure you're using the right string. Is it really an E string?

If it is, then just tighten it slowly until it's the correct pitch. Some people like to let them stretch overnight before tightening them all the way. I've always just tuned them right up to pitch immediately.
